Shoulder Impingement

Shoulder Impingement Treatment in South Surrey, BC

What is it?

Shoulder impingement syndrome occurs when the rotator cuff tendons become irritated and inflamed as they pass through the subacromial space—the area just beneath the acromion, a bony prominence of the shoulder blade. This condition often results from repetitive overhead activities like throwing or reaching, or from structural issues within the shoulder joint. Shoulder impingement commonly leads to pain, weakness, and restricted movement, especially when the arm is lifted overhead or moved away from the body.

Treatment usually includes manual therapy (such as Physiotherapy or Chiropractic Care) to strengthen surrounding shoulder muscles, along with rest and anti-inflammatory medication. In some cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery may be recommended to reduce pressure on the affected tendons and improve shoulder function.

Benefits of treatment:

At our

South Surrey Clinic

, we offer manual therapy (

Physiotherapy

and

Chiropractic Care

) for shoulder impingement that includes targeted techniques like massage, mobilization, and manipulation, providing several key benefits:

  1. Pain Reduction: Manual therapy relieves shoulder impingement pain by decreasing muscle tension, enhancing joint mobility, and reducing inflammation.
  2. Improved Range of Motion: Our techniques target stiff or restricted areas in the shoulder joint and surrounding tissues, improving joint mobility and flexibility for an increased range of motion.
  3. Muscle Relaxation: Manual therapy relaxes tight muscles and releases trigger points contributing to shoulder impingement, enhancing muscle function and reducing strain on tendons.
  4. Enhanced Tissue Healing: Techniques like soft tissue mobilization and myofascial release promote blood flow to injured tissues, supporting healing and tissue repair.
  5. Correction of Movement Patterns: Combining manual therapy with therapeutic exercises helps correct faulty movement patterns and biomechanical imbalances that can lead to shoulder impingement, reducing recurrence risk.
  6. Patient Education: Our therapists provide guidance on posture, ergonomics, and body mechanics to help patients prevent shoulder impingement symptoms during daily activities or sports.

At our Pain Free South Surrey location, we recognize the importance of qualified, personalized care in manual therapy. Our experienced practitioners develop treatment approaches tailored to each patient’s specific needs. Manual therapy often works within a comprehensive rehabilitation plan, which may also include strengthening exercises, stretching, and activity modification to ensure lasting results.

Manual therapy (Physiotherapy, Chiropractic Care) is effective for managing shoulder impingement across various demographics, depending on symptoms and underlying causes:

  • Athletes: Athletes in sports with repetitive overhead movements, like baseball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball, often experience shoulder impingement. Manual therapy can relieve symptoms, enhance shoulder function, and prevent further injuries in these individuals.
  • Active Individuals: People in occupations or activities with frequent overhead lifting, such as construction work, painting, or playing musical instruments, may develop shoulder impingement. Manual therapy can manage symptoms and optimize shoulder function for these individuals.
  • Office Workers: Those who spend extended periods at a desk may develop poor posture and shoulder tightness, contributing to impingement symptoms. Manual therapy addresses muscular imbalances, alleviates discomfort, and improves posture for office workers.
  • Aging Population: As we age, degenerative changes in the shoulder joint can lead to impingement. Manual therapy improves joint mobility, reduces pain, and helps older adults maintain independence in daily activities.
  • Post-Surgical Patients: Patients recovering from shoulder impingement surgery may benefit from manual therapy as part of rehabilitation. It helps reduce post-operative pain, restore range of motion, and support a smooth recovery.
  • Individuals with Postural Issues: Poor posture leads to muscular imbalances and altered shoulder mechanics, increasing the risk of impingement. Manual therapy targeting posture correction can alleviate symptoms and reduce the chance of recurrence.

In summary, anyone with shoulder pain, stiffness, weakness, or limited range of motion related to shoulder impingement can benefit from manual therapy at our South Surrey location as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. A consultation with a healthcare professional ensures the treatment approach aligns with individual needs and conditions.

It may be beneficial to consult a manual therapist (Physiotherapy, Chiropractic Care) for shoulder impingement if you experience the following:

  • Persistent Shoulder Pain: If shoulder pain persists, especially during overhead activities, a manual therapist can evaluate and address underlying causes.
  • Limited Range of Motion: Difficulty moving your shoulder fully, particularly when reaching upward, may signal impingement. A therapist can assess and improve your shoulder’s range of motion.
  • Weakness or Instability: Shoulder weakness or instability—especially if it hinders lifting or daily activities—indicates it’s time for a professional evaluation to rule out impingement as a cause.
  • Pain at Rest: Pain that lingers even while at rest or disrupts sleep could mean a more serious shoulder issue, making it essential to consult a manual therapist for diagnosis and treatment.
  • Difficulty with Daily Activities: If shoulder discomfort or restricted movement interferes with dressing, reaching, or lifting, it’s advisable to seek therapy to restore shoulder function.
  • Previous Shoulder Injuries: Those with a history of shoulder injuries or repetitive strain may have an increased risk of impingement. Therapy can help manage symptoms and prevent future issues.
  • Referred Pain: Pain radiating from the shoulder to the arm or neck, especially with tingling, numbness, or weakness, may indicate nerve involvement. A manual therapist can provide appropriate evaluation and treatment.

Consulting with a manual therapist (Physiotherapy, Chiropractic Care) early can help prevent symptom progression and enable effective management of shoulder impingement, promoting quicker recovery and improved outcomes.

Manual therapy (Physiotherapy, Chiropractic Care) offers comprehensive support for shoulder impingement by targeting several key aspects of recovery and prevention:

  • Pain Relief: Techniques such as soft tissue mobilization, massage, and joint mobilization alleviate pain by relaxing tight muscles, reducing spasms, and promoting relaxation in the shoulder area.
  • Restoring Range of Motion: Joint mobilization and stretching techniques improve shoulder flexibility and movement, helping to relieve impingement and enabling a fuller range of motion.
  • Reducing Inflammation: Lymphatic drainage massage and gentle mobilization decrease inflammation, easing associated pain and swelling in the shoulder.
  • Restoring Muscle Balance: Manual therapy addresses shoulder muscle imbalances and weaknesses with targeted techniques, like myofascial release, which helps optimize muscle function.
  • Improving Joint Alignment: Realigning the shoulder joint through mobilization and manipulation reduces mechanical compression on the rotator cuff tendons and other structures, easing impingement.
  • Enhancing Proprioception: Techniques like proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) boost awareness of joint position and neuromuscular control, supporting efficient movement and reducing injury risk.
  • Promoting Tissue Healing: Friction massage and cross-friction techniques stimulate blood flow, prevent scar tissue, remove metabolic waste, and support healing in the shoulder region.
  • Preventing Recurrence: Manual therapists provide guidance on posture, ergonomics, and movement mechanics to prevent recurrence. They may also recommend exercises and stretches to maintain long-term shoulder health.

In sum, manual therapy (Physiotherapy, Chiropractic Care) at our South Surrey clinic is instrumental for anyone in the area managing shoulder impingement by focusing on pain reduction, restoring mobility, enhancing muscle function, and promoting tissue healing. Consulting a qualified manual therapist is essential for a personalized and effective treatment approach.

Went in to see Parm for some wrist and neck problems. We are mid-way through treatment and the pain is non-existent. On top of that, after few adjustments, I am noticing that my senses are heightened and I am thinking clearer, which I was not expecting. Parm's very professional and knowledgable. I highly recommend him.

I have had chronic pain for years and I have been to many different clinics and Pain Free Health is definitely one of the best clinics I’ve been to. The ladies working at the front fest are very friendly and helpful and Ravi (chiro) and Gina (massage) are both awesome. I have had horrible experiences at some other places but everyone at Pain Free seems to truly care about their patients.
