5 Exercises for Weak Glutes: Build Strength and Improve Hip Stability

Date: October 31, 2026

Learn how glute-strengthening exercises can support hip stability, lower-body strength, and movement control. Discover five exercises commonly used in rehabilitation and strength training to help strengthen the gluteal muscles and support everyday movement.

Why Are Strong Glutes Important?

Your gluteal muscles play an important role in hip stability, lower-body movement, and everyday activities. They help support movements such as walking, climbing stairs, standing on one leg, and performing exercises that require balance and control.

Building glute strength can be a useful part of a fitness or rehabilitation program. However, the right exercises and progressions depend on your current strength, movement ability, and individual needs.

Here are five exercises commonly used in strength training and rehabilitation to target the gluteal muscles.

1. Pelvic Hikes

Pelvic hikes focus on hip control and the muscles that help stabilize the pelvis. This exercise can be included in a program designed to improve pelvic stability and control during single-leg movements.

2. Lateral Step Downs

Lateral step downs challenge single-leg strength, balance, and lower-body control. They also allow you to work on controlling your hip and knee alignment during movement.

3. Single-Leg Romanian Deadlifts (RDLs)

Single-leg Romanian deadlifts target the glutes and other muscles involved in hip extension. They also challenge balance and coordination while helping you practice controlling your body through a hip-hinge movement.

4. Pigeon Raises

Pigeon raises can be used to target the gluteal muscles while challenging hip control. As with other strengthening exercises, proper technique and an appropriate level of difficulty are important.

5. Single-Leg Hip Thrusts

Single-leg hip thrusts focus on glute strength through hip extension. Because the exercise is performed on one leg, it also challenges stability and control.

How Do You Know Which Glute Exercises Are Right for You?

Not every exercise is suitable for everyone. Your current strength, mobility, balance, movement patterns, and symptoms can affect which exercises are appropriate and how they should be progressed.

If you experience hip pain, knee discomfort, or difficulty performing certain movements, a physiotherapist can assess your movement and help guide an exercise program based on your individual needs.

Working on technique and gradually progressing your exercises can help you build strength in a way that suits your abilities.
